Some of the College's committees will offer payment to students reps in return for them atending committee meetings. Why? Well, attending committees can often mean that students will miss out on teaching. The £20 attendance payment serves as a thank you to the student reps for helping the College by providing a student perspective on things (believe it or not, we actually do like to know what you're thinking!).
However, it's worth noting that not all committees will provide payment; Health & Safety are not eligible, for example. Course Management Committees, Academic Board, Research Degree, Research Strategy, Student Support, Campus Services, Teaching Quality and Learning, Teaching and Assessment will though! If you aren't sure then send an to Cheryl Jackson (cjackson@rvc.ac.uk).
If you do attend an eligible meeting and you wish to get paid then you'll need to print out the form that accompanies this post and fill it in. It's particularly important that you do fill in as much as you can, especially the bank account details and your estimated income for the year. In the latter case, it doesn't have to be exact as it is only an estimate that Finance will use to see if you need to be taxed or not (no, really) . Basically, if you're income for the year doesn't exceed the annual tax-free allowance (about £7500) you won't get taxed. Don't forget that income does NOT include your student loan!
Once you've filled the form in you'll need to get it counter-signed by the Secretary or Chair of the meeting (to prove you were actually there). At this point it would be a good idea to make a copy of the form as things sometimes go missing in the post. Once you've done that, send it to:
Sandra Ward,
Academic Development,
Hawkshead
Sandra will then process it and send it on to Finance for you. The money should then arrive in your account a couple of weeks later.
If you have any problems or questions then please feel free to contact Sandra on sward@rvc.ac.uk
